My colleague Alvin Lai likened himself to Dusty Rhodes, “pinch hitter extraordinaire.” I have to admit, when I first read that sentence, I thought “Duh, Yea. The American Dream!” Blonde hair, yellow polka dots, and “Sweeeeeeet Saphire!” Heck, even wikipedia lists him before the baseball player…c’mon, Al!
Where am I going with this? Well, I’m going to set you back to Game one of the 1988 World Series. Dennis Velasco was set to take the swings at this pick. But it’s a team effort here, and when one of us can’t take the cuts, we step up.
Allow me to limp up to the DroppingDimes plate as none other than Kirk Gibson. Vin Scully, take it from here… “Look who’s coming up…”

Stat’s All Folks: Doing It Preseason Style!

I have to admit, I was brainstorming and thinking of different ways to write an introductory paragraph about how the NBA was back, but for some reason I just couldn’t come up with anything. I wrote out the ubiquitous Star Wars reference about Episode V, but didn’t want to appear too fanboyish the first time out. Then Apocalypse Now hit my head with that whole “I love the smell of…,” but thought of the connotations and chucked that idea. Then the Rodney Dangerfield classic, Back to School came to mind and how the NBA doesn’t get any respect, but didn’t want to go on a diatribe validating the League.
So, what am I saying?
I watch entirely too many movies, but I’m also way too excited about the NBA being back to think straight. However, I’ll pop in Brad Pitt’s Meet Joe Black into the DVD player to bore me and calm my nerves enough to write this article.

During the regular season, the aim of Stat’s All Folks will be to take a stock market look at the standard cumulative categories – points, assists, rebounds, three-pointers made, steals, and blocks. I’ll be calling out the “bulls” and “bears” in each category, in order to help you assess your portfolio of players on your fantasy basketball team(s) and whether you should sell, hold, and/or diversify your assets.

Corey Maggette must be wondering if he is on a special episode of Punk’d. How else can you explain when Maggette was coming back from a left foot injury which forced him to miss 39 games, he was coming off the bench for the Clippers. What?!?! Maggette would be a starter for any other NBA team. Heck, Corey Maggette almost got traded for Ron Artest. Who was starting in place of Corey? Let’s see… Vladamir Radmanovic. Come on?! Now that Vlad Rad signed with the cross-town rival Los Angeles Lakers you think the starter gig belongs to Maggette. Wrong! There is talk that free agent acquisition Tim Thomas will be the starting SF. Ashton Kutcher where are you?
There could be a solution to this Corey Maggette starting gig dilemma; Cuttino Mobley has offered to come of the bench in place of Maggette. We will see if Coach Dunleavy will accept Mobley’s offer.

Round 5, Pick 1: Chris Kaman, C, Los Angeles Clippers
While the “looks” may have waved bye-bye to this guy quite some time ago, fantasy production is all about “opportunity.” And what better way to increase a player’s opportunity than to increase his minutes per game by about 27%? This is exactly what happened in Los Angeles, when former MAC big man Chris Kaman was given about 33 minutes a game last year. One quick glance at his stats, and nothing crazy may jump out at you, but something tells me that Kaman may be one of the best second centers in fantasy basketball this season – if not a solid C1.

Dropping Dimes Draft Blog: Round 1, Pick 8

Imagine a round of golf with your friends that has been fun and competitive thus far. No one usually does anything too crazy when starting off a round. But heading towards the 8th tee, some of them are going to want to take out their driver and try to hit the ball right at the flag. So what, they say, if the hole is set up as a dog leg right, and that their short-cut is protected by trees, a valley and a lake of water. Did I mention that the green is also protected by a series of bunkers and that the wind is blowing in your faces? Let these “expert” friends of yours take this sucker shot. You are going to be like Tiger Woods and play it safer but smart. Leave the big dog to eat another day, take out your 3-wood and launch it a country mile right down the fairway.

Playing the Percentages - Field Goal

Percentages. What was today’s stock price increase/decrease? How did you do on your math test? You are within the top percentage in your department in sales. Your company has met the percentage goal of their yearly targets. Where are you with the books? What are my chances of winning this poker hand? What are my chances with the blonde at the end of the bar? We are a society driven by percentages.
In fantasy basketball, the emphasis on the percentages has taken a back seat to the flashier stats like points, rebounds and assists. Depending on how your Roto or H2H league is set-up, the percentages could be the difference from being a champ or a chump.
In a mini-series of articles, I will discuss the following percentages; Field Goal, Free Throw and 3 Point. I am a big believer in picking the best player in the draft, however, if you were to decide between Player A vs. Player B and both players have similar stats, I will strongly consider the player that will help improve my team’s percentages. (Percentages used for this article are referenced from the ‘05-‘06 regular season.)
